University of Kinshasa

The University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN) is the largest public university in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It comprises several faculties, including the Faculty of Medicine, within which the Department of Tropical Medicine is housed. Beyond its core mission of training future professionals, UNIKIN is a leading research institution with extensive experience in the design, implementation, and conduct of national and international research projects.

Prof. Dr. Daddy Mata

Professor Daddy Mata is a radiologist, specialized among others, in pediatric imaging, with a cross-appointment at Dalhousie University in Canada and at the University of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He did the medical school in DRC followed by extensive training at Tohoku University in Japan including the radiology residency and postdoctoral fellowship before working as an assistant professor at the same university. Afterwards, he moved to the university of Toronto in Canada for a clinical fellowship in pediatric imaging before he landed a job as a radiologist at IWK Health Centre and as associate professor and program director for pediatric radiology residency and fellowship at Dalhousie University in Canada. He is also a head of the division of pediatric radiology at the university of Kinshasa. Professor Mata conducts a number of research projects and teaching seminars including the YouTube channel, to support the development of French speaking radiology trainees and attendings, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Prof. Hypolite Muhindo Mavoko

Hypolite Muhindo Mavoko is a Medical Doctor, holding a PhD in medical sciences. He is currently a full professor, working at the Department of Tropical Medicine, at the University of Kinshasa, in the DRC. He has been principal investigator of a number of clinical trials on Ebola, Covid-19 and Mpox vaccines; some of them enrolling special populations such as children, people living with HIV and pregnant women. He conducts studies on malaria, including clinical trials, observational studies and evaluation of the accuracy of diagnostic tools.

He is involved in observational studies on Mpox transmission and clinical description, vaccination coverage, as well as the environmental surveillance of pathogens such as Mpox virus, poliovirus, cholera, etc. All these research activities are conducted in collaboration with several consortia, which fuels his scientific leadership and networking skills. He acts as well as advisor, consultant and medical monitor for different organizations.
