CISM (Manhiça Health Research Center) is a consolidated research center, highly specialized and with a strong capacity for research on transmissible diseases prevalent in Mozambique, with particular focus on the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the country (malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and bacterial diseases). The CISM is managed by The Manhiça Foundation, a private non-profit foundation, created in 2008 by the governments of Mozambique and Spain, the National Institute of Health of Mozambique (INS), The Clinical Foundation for Biomedical Research (Hospital Clínic-University of Barcelona) and Dr. Pascoal Mocumbi as an honorary founding member.
Dr. Dinis Nguenha is a Mozambican physician–researcher with 7+ years of experience in global health and infectious diseases. He works at the Manhiça Health Research Center (CISM), leading studies on tuberculosis and HIV with a focus on diagnostics, surveillance, and technology-enabled care. Dr. Nguenha earned his MD from Saratov State Medical University (Russia), an MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and is a PhD candidate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (Amsterdam UMC). He has hands-on experience in clinical trials of TB vaccines and therapeutics and currently leads projects applying artificial intelligence to diagnose respiratory diseases in adults and children. The author of 25+ peer-reviewed publications, he contributes to national TB policy in Mozambique and has informed World Health Organization recommendations through evidence generation and technical engagement. His work bridges research, implementation, and impact.
